The Moirai (or Fates) in Greek mythology are known as the three goddesses— Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos— who personify and dictate the destiny of mortals and gods. They spin, measure, and cut the thread of life, ensuring every being lives out their predetermined fate from birth to death.
Each pair of arms represents a goddess: Bottom pair: Clotho, who spins the thread of life and acts as the birth of someone's life. Middle pair: Lachesis, who measures the thread and determines the length and quality of one's life. Top pair: Atropos, who cuts the thread and marks the end of one's life.
Each arm also represent woven and/or knitted fabrics that can be made from thread such as denim, wool, linen, and lace.
The subject plays with the thread, creating a string figure that is reminiscent of a butterfly. Butterflies are widely known to represent spiritual transformation and growth. (It felt right to have the arms representing Lachesis to make the figure since a multitude of changes and growth can take place in someone's life.)
